Spotlight on: Access to Food in the COVID-19 Response

The COVID-19 pandemic is not an equal opportunity pandemic and will have a greater impact on the most vulnerable members of society. Many members of our community have been struggling with hunger and poverty before the pandemic, and will likely now face greater difficulties securing the most basic necessities of life. The pandemic will also affect economic and social systems, which can make otherwise financially secure individuals and families experience financial difficulties and become food insecure.

The City of Ottawa has created a Human Needs Task Force to ensure the City is able to respond to the needs of Ottawa residents during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Social Planning Council of Ottawa builds connections and capacity in the community using a community development approach that brings people and organizations together to take action on social issues. As part of its’ pandemic response, the Social Planning Council of Ottawa has been supporting a network of ethno-cultural senior groups with grocery shopping and food delivery, particularly in priority neighbourhoods – serving 86 households to date with more each week.  To find out more contact [email protected] or visit the website here.  Click here to read the overall SPCO COVID-19 response and access links to additional community resources.
